Convert a Photo to Abstract Painting Online Free

Use this free abstract art generator to transform a photo into a colorful abstract art painting made from layered polygons. Choose a portrait, landscape, pet photo, or everyday scene, then adjust the settings until the image has the balance of detail and shape you want. Preview and download the result without uploading your picture or adding a watermark.

How this abstract image generator works

The generator makes a compact color map from your photo, groups nearby pixels with similar colors, and traces a polygon around each group. The polygons keep the colors of the original image while simplifying small details into larger areas of color. The finished image has a geometric, mosaic-like style that can be a starting point for an abstract art painting, a poster, or a creative profile image.

Image decoding and polygon generation run in a background worker in your browser. Your photo is not sent to a server. The included Mona Lisa preview is processed by the same generator, so you can see the effect before choosing your own image.

How do I make abstract expressionism online for free?

For a free geometric interpretation of abstract expressionism, start with a photo and let the generator simplify it into colored shapes. Choose the Mona Lisa sample or upload your own image, then change one setting at a time to explore different levels of abstraction.

  1. Choose an image with the file picker, or drag a photo onto the preview.
  2. Adjust the settings. The preview updates as you move a slider.
  3. Save or copy. Download PNG saves the artwork, or Copy PNG copies it to your clipboard.

What the settings change

Similarity

Similarity sets how different two colors can be and still belong to the same group. Higher values create fewer, larger regions and simplify more detail. Values between 10 and 100 are a useful place to start.

Minimum Group Size

Groups smaller than this value are skipped, leaving transparent gaps in the artwork. Increasing it removes tiny details; lowering it keeps more of the source image.

Maximum Group Size

This limits how many sampled pixels can form one polygon. Lower values tend to create smaller, more detailed shapes. Higher values can create broad areas of color.

Try a higher Similarity value together with a larger Maximum Group Size for broad, simplified color fields. For a busier abstract image with more visible detail, lower the group limit and keep the minimum size modest. Every change is rendered locally, so you can experiment and download the version you like.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded?

No. Your selected image is read and processed in your browser. It is not sent to the site.

Can I copy the artwork?

Yes. Copy PNG places the generated image on your clipboard in browsers that support image clipboard access.

Can I download the result?

Yes. Download PNG keeps the source image’s proportions, with its longest side up to 2,000 pixels. Skipped groups remain transparent.

Is this an AI abstract art generator?

No. This is a procedural abstract image generator: it groups photo colors and draws polygons, without text prompts or an AI image model. If you searched for an “AI graphical abstract generator free online,” this tool is for turning a photo into decorative abstract art, rather than creating a scientific diagram from text.
